Banking
When looking for financial products, you want to try to maximize savings potential. We don’t have much use for a bricks-and-mortar bank. Most of our banking is done online, anyway. We have been with Capital One 360 since it was ING Direct 15 years ago! They have much better interest rates and are a good place for a savings account.

Investing
The primary vehicle that we use to propel us towards financial independence is through investing in equities and bonds.
For this, our most important financial product is to invest with Vanguard. Vanguard has a number of index mutual funds and ETFs that meet our needs and the expense ratios are lower than almost anywhere around. We have our IRAs, brokerage account and Simon’s 529 in Vanguard.
Individual Stocks
We never used to invest in individual stock because usually, different brokerage accounts would charge $5-8 per trade. That is a lot of money lost. We like M1 Finance because it allows free trades so you get to keep more of your money!

Portfolio Management
Our favorite product to use on our path to financial independence is Personal Capital.
Personal Capital allows us to see all of our accounts in one place. We are able to see the performance of all of our assets, look at our debt, and get a snap picture of our net worth.
You don’t know where to go if you don’t know where you are.
Financial Bookshelf
The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins is what many in the Financial Independence community suggest as the best starting point for a book on how to begin your journey. JL Collins also has a great blog with good information.
The book that made us scrutinize our finances more was Andrew Hallam’s Millionaire Teacher. This is good for everyone, but especially international educators like ourselves. His follow-up book, Millionaire Expat, is good for anyone who lives overseas.
